seaport in the Marche, located in central Italy. It has a population of
over 100,000. Ancona is located by the Adriatic Sea and is the center of
the Province of Ancona and also the capital of that region. Its
beautiful monuments and buildings have withstood centuries to stand as
testimonials to this breathtaking city. The Cathedral St. Ciriaco was constructed
in 1128 and completed in 1189. It was built in the form of a Greek cross
and has a dodecagonal dome over the center.
