Two of the best excursions while
you are visiting Bologna are listed here. Whether you want a partial or
whole day excursion, these two places are a wonderful addition to your
Bologna sightseeing tour.
If you only have a partial day available,
then Parma is a wonderful choice for an excursion. Its only 56 miles outside
of Bologna, and has a historic value, much like all the cities in Italy.
Parma is the second most populous city, with Bologna being the first, in
the Emilia-Romagna region. Parma is world famous for the delicious cheeses
and hams that they produce. Parma is also recognized as the home of Verdi,
and the final resting place of world renowned violinist Nicolo Paganini.
Things that you can do in Parma include opera, theater, museums where you
can view original works by such artists as da Vinco and El Greco, and the
beautiful and historic Romanesque Cathedral and Baptistry. The train station
in Bologna has trains that leave for Parma each hour, and the trip takes
less than an hour one way.
The Parma tourist office is located
at Via Melloni 1/b. You can contact the tourist office by calling (0521)
218 889.
If you have an entire day to devote,
you should plan to visit Florence. This trip takes only one hour from the
train station in Bologna, and is well worth the hour ride to view the amazing
sights that Florence holds. Florence lies at the heart of the Renaissance
age, and museums proudly display works by Michelangelo and Masaccio. The
Cathedrals and Churches are magnificent in Florence and are definitely
worth the excursion into this amazing city. Be sure to stop for an espresso
or cappuccino at one of the many piazzas, or plan to have a picnic at the
Boboli Gardens. You can dine in outdoor splendor, surrounded by gargoyles
in this mystical and historic garden.
For information, you can contact
the Florence tourist office at Borgo Santa Croce 29, or by calling (055)
234 0444.
Whatever your time line for excursions
from Bologna, these are two very popular spots. The culture and heritage
in both cities is one of the things that makes Italy so unique, and why
tourists travel thousands of miles every year for a visit to this mystical
country.
