The currency in Italy
is the Euro. The Italian Lira was replaced in 2002,
and now the Euro is the official Italian currency.
You can convert US dollars to Euros at any bank during your visit
to Italy. The currency exchange currently is 1.42 US dollars to
1 Euro.
If you dont want to exchange
your currency, or find it a bit confusing, you can also use credit or debit
cards or travelers checks during your Italy stay. Most merchants
in Italy accept MasterCard and Visa, along with the Diners Club
card. And travelers checks are accepted countrywide by almost every merchant.
You can also take your travelers checks to any bank and convert them into
Euros, if you want to spend the actual country currency while in
Italy. Coins are available in the same denominations as US coins,
with the addition of the €2 and the €1. Paper notes, or Euro
dollars are also available in the same denominations as the US dollar up
to the €500. And remember that collecting foreign money, at least
a one dollar denomination is a hobby of many people. So if you do decide
to exchange your currency, keep at least a dollar for a souvenir when you
return home.
