| Livorno, Italy
is a port city located on the western edge of Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian
Sea. Livorno is the capital of the Province of Livorno and
is also the third largest port on Italy’s western coast. A breed of chicken
was named after Livorno, called the leghorn. This was the inspiration
for the Foghorn Leghorn cartoon character.
There are many beautiful sights
to see in and around Livorno. The museo Mascagnano holds historical
remembrances from Pietro Mascagni, Italian composer. Each year during the
lyric music season, Mascagni’s operas are highlighted. There is also a
walkway that is divided from the sea by a handrail named in his honor,
the Terrazza Mascagni. The Sanctuary of Montenero is dedicated to Our Lady
of the Graces, the patron saint of Tuscany.
The Piazza della Repubblica
is also located in Livorno. This square contains two monuments of
Italian politicians. The Piazza della Repubblica is also a bridge that
hovers over a very large canal. It is the largest bridge in Europe. Another
sight that you must make time for on your visit to Livorno is the
old fortress. This is a brick building which defended the city from attacks
by pirates during Medici’s time.
The first bathing establishments
in Europe were built in Livorno during the 19th century. The Natural
History Museum and the Aquarium both contain many treasures that have been
recovered from the sea. Livorno is also home to the Naval Academy,
where Italian Naval Officers have been trained for over a century. The
Naval Academy hosts a Sailing Trophy each year, and entrants from all over
the world participate.
