| Palermo, Italy
was founded in the 8th century BC. Today it is the principal city and the
administrative seat of the autonomous region of Sicily. Palermo
is also the capital of the Province of Palermo. While the general
concept of Sicilian people is dark hair and darker eyes, Palermo
produces blond haired, blue eyed natives. In 1060, Normans landed in Palermo
and started a plight to take control of the island from the Arabs. There
are still elements of both cultures notable in Palermo today, even
in the architecture, which is a uniquely styled Norman-Arabic.
Keep in mind if you plan to
visit Palermo that it has never been known as the friendliest
and most welcoming city. There are sections of Palermo that are
considered dangerous. There are also, however, many points of fascinating
interest, both culturally and historically. Many buildings are currently
being restored and streets and facades are being cleaned and repaired,
in order to make Palermo more appealing to visitors.
Some interesting points to
see when you visit Palermo are the Cathedral of Palermo,
erected in 1185, the San Giovanni degli Eremiti, erected in 1132, the Martorana,
erected in 1143, and the 12th century San Cataldo.
