| Transportation in and
around Palermo is much the same as in any other city in Italy. You
can fly in from Rome or Naples, and land at Falcone e Borsellino-Punta
Raisi, which is 19 miles to Palermo’s west. From the airport, you
can take a bus or taxi into the city. The drive normally takes around 20
minutes, depending on traffic. Palermo is also just a 3 ½
hour ride from Messina.
Buses can be located around
Palermo, and can connect you to many other major cities. There are
currently around 25 buses that make daily transports to Catania, which
will take you about 2 ½ hours. Other buses will take you on the
four hour transport to Syracuse.
While in Palermo, you
can take a bus or taxi to get you around the city. You can check with your
hotel, or with bus stations for costs and schedules. Taxis are available
in Palermo, however, it should be noted that most Palermo
taxi drivers do not speak much English, so an interpreter or other ways
of communication may be needed.
You may choose to drive yourself.
Note that most parking situations are terrible, and it can be hard to find
your way around. However, many of the main attraction sights are not within
walking distance of each other, so you will probably need some sort of
transportation. Get the address of the sights that you plan to visit, and
give that to your taxi driver. You can also call Radio Taxi at 091-512727
or 091-513311 and request and English speaking driver.
