| Pisa, Italy is located
in the central Tuscany region, on the bank of the Arno River on the Ligurian
Sea. Pisa is the capital city of the Province of Pisa. Many
people travel to Pisa each year to gaze at the ever popular Leaning
Tower of Pisa. However, many of those same tourists
fail to venture further around the city to view the many other interesting
points that Pisa has to offer.
The church of Santo Stefano
dei Cavalieri is a beautiful building that houses a bust by Donatello,
as well as paintings by Vasari, among other artists. It is also home to
many remains of naval battles between the Knights of St. Stephan and the
Turks during the 16th and 18th centuries. The church of St. Francis is
also located in Pisa. This church was designed by Giovanni di Simone
and houses works by Jacopo da Empoli and Santi di Tito. Ugolino della Gherardesca
and his sons are buried in the Gherardesca Chapel there.
You can stroll beneath medieval
arcades on the Borgo Stretto, as well as the Lungarno avenues along the
river Arno. Included are the Gothic Romanesque church of San Michele in
Borgo, erected in 990. Pisa is also home to two other leaning towers.
These are located, one at the southern end, and another halfway through
the Piagge riverside promenade.
