| Due
to the extreme erratic driving, as well as the interweaving paths of mopeds,
pedestrians, and trams, the experience of driving in Rome
is better left to those who are familiar with the territory. Many areas
are prohibited to enter by vehicle, with exceptions to visitors making
their way to their hotel. That being said, there are many other methods
of transportation in and around Rome
that are easy to locate and much easier and safer to use. If you feel,
however, that you will be able to handle the traffic and parking difficulties,
cars can be rented at the airport when you arrive in Rome,
if you arrive by air. If you are not planning to fly into
Rome, you can still go by the airport and rent a car for your stay,
however, it is most recommended that you leave the driving to those who
are familiar with the area, and know how to get around Rome.
There
are buses that run from many stops to the Lazio region and also from Stazione
Tiburtina to many destinations in Italy. The main
carrier is Eurolines, which runs from Tiburtina to many other European
destinations. Termini Station is the main bus station in
Rome. You can contact them by calling ATAC at (06) 4695 2032. There
is also a regional transport authority that you can contact by calling
COTRAL at (06) 57531. Buses are an easier way to get around while you are
in Rome, and you can find buses running to virtually every point
of interest.
Taxis
are available for your transportation in Rome, although
taxis can be very expensive. Most will charge an additional fee for luggage.
Its best to find out exactly what fees are included in the meter charge,
before you hire a taxi for transport. If you do decide to hail a taxi,
be sure that it is an official taxi, for safetys sake.
Limousines
are also available and rates will vary with each company.
Getting
to Rome, Italy is easy by either train or plane. The main
airport in Rome is the Fiumicino, or the Leonardo
Da Vinci. Ciampino is another airport, where domestic and a few international
flights can be found. Keep in mind that you are required to pay a departure
tax when you purchase your ticket either into or out of Italy.
