When most people think of Rome, the Vatican
City automatically comes to mind. The Vatican City is
an enclave or Rome. The Vatican is a
wonderful place to visit while you are seeing Rome,
but the Eternal City also has many other things going
for it.
Rome, Italy sits on the River
Tiber, between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian
Sea. It is the capital city of Italy and the Lazio region.
The population of Rome is more than 2.7
million. The central metropolitan area has a population
of around 4 million.
It would be hard to determine what is most fascinating
about Rome. From the Vatican to the Colisseum,
there are many places to get a feel of the historical
culture that this beautiful city has to offer.
The climate in Rome is mild and
sunny during the spring and fall months. Normal temperatures
during late August are still in the 90 degree range. During
December, when most of the world is covered in freezing
temperatures and blankets of snow, Rome’s highs generally
reach 57 degrees. The overall climate in Rome
is a typical Mediterranean climate, and although the most
comfortable temperatures are found from April to June,
any time of year is perfect for visiting Italy’s capital
city.
Within the Centro Storico, Rome’s historic centre,
you will find buildings from the Renaissance period. Narrow,
winding, cobble stone streets are located on the side,
and they open up to wonderful piazzas by Baroque Churches,
regal palaces and beautiful fountains. Bernini’s Fountain
of the Four Rivers is located in Rome
in the exquisite and romantic Piazza Navona. You can easily
walk from there to the Piazza di Spagna and the Trevi
Fountain by La Dolce Vita.
The Vatican State lies just to the west across
the Tiber River. Here you can see the monumental Vatican,
which is home to Pope Benedict XVI and see the spiritual
center of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Colosseum is found in Rome
also. This splendid and historical monument was built
almost 2000 years ago, and is considered an architectural
wonder. The Colosseum amphitheatre was used historically
to host gladiator shows. There were also animal hunts
shown inside the amphitheatre. The Colosseum is filled
with ancient culture and breathtakingly beautiful views
of civilization in early Italy.
There are many beautiful places to visit in Rome,
and many friendly natives to this area. Finding time to
enjoy everything that Rome has to offer
may be your only worry.
