| Verona, Italy is probably
best known for being the setting for Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. Verona
is located in northern Italy and is the provincial capital in Veneto. It
lies in the loop of the Adige River near Lake Garda. Due to its positioning,
Verona was subject to frequent flooding until the Mori-Torbole tunnel
was constructed in 1956. This beautiful city is also known for the Roman
amphitheatre, the Arena. The Arena was erected around 30 AD and is the
third largest of its kind in all of Italy. The shows and gladiator games
that were performed here were once so famous that they attracted visitors
from far outside of Verona.
Other monuments in Verona
include the Roman theatre which was constructed in the 1st century, and
the Ponte di Pietra. The Arco dei Gavi is dedicated to the Gavii, a Roman
family whose heritage is important in Roman history. The Gavi Arch was
erected in the 1st century also, and has the name of the architect who
built it engraved on it. The architect Lucius Vivtruvius Cordone is one
of very few who are noted on the buildings that they constructed. Verona
is also the birthplace of Catullus and where Julius Caesar chose to inhabit
for his relaxing vacations.
